Our History

In October 2010, Journey Church was founded by Pastors Tom and Terrie Wallace, who, guided by faith, left the comfort of a traditional denomination. Their journey began with an impromptu goodbye to their congregation and a leap into uncertainty. This leap was quickly supported by their staff and more than 300 people who gathered for their first service in a Myrtle Beach park. The church quickly found its footing, renting space for Sunday services and engaging the community through various activities.

Over the years, Journey Church has evolved, moving from a rented school to a vacant theater in Surfside Beach, and finally to its current home in the Burgess community. Along the way, the church has not only grown in size but also in its mission, becoming a hub for community service and a beacon of Christ’s love. It has partnered with local schools, community centers, and other organizations to serve the surrounding areas through numerous charitable efforts.

Today, Journey Church is not just a place of worship but also a vital part of the community, offering sanctuary, fellowship, and support to those in need. With the recent acquisition of a building on Palmetto Point Blvd, it’s now embarking on an exciting new chapter with the addition of Journey Christian Academy, further expanding its impact and continuing its mission to serve and unite under the guiding principle of one nation, under God.

Journey Christian Academy provides a rigorous, Christ-centered education that prepares students for college, trade school, and a successful life. We foster critical thinking, individual growth, and a biblical worldview. Our Christian educators partner with families to nurture students’ academic strengths, address weaknesses, and instill core Christian values in accordance with God’s Word.

Journey Christian Academy utilizes a curriculum that emphasizes academic excellence while seamlessly integrating scriptural teachings. Our approach is founded on the belief that all truth originates from God.

  • Core Subjects: Math, science, language arts, and history/social studies are taught from a biblical perspective. This means exploring scientific discoveries within the context of God’s creation, analyzing historical events through the lens of God’s providence, and applying biblical principles to literature and language.
  • Bible Integration: We don’t just add Bible studies; we weave scriptural themes throughout our lessons. Students might examine ethical dilemmas in light of biblical wisdom, discuss the impact of faith on historical figures, or analyze literary themes that reflect Christian values.
  • Differentiated Instruction: Our curriculum is adaptable to meet students’ individual needs. Teachers provide support for areas of weakness and opportunities for enrichment in areas of strength, ensuring each student is challenged and encouraged.

Journey Christian Academy seeks educators who demonstrate both professional excellence and a deep commitment to their Christian faith. Our staff members possess the following qualifications:

  • Academic Credentials: Teachers hold relevant certifications in the field which they are instructing. Many hold advanced degrees in education or their subject area.
  • Christian Testimony: Staff members are active members of their church communities and demonstrate a personal walk with Christ that aligns with the school’s statement of faith.
  • Teaching Expertise: Teachers possess a strong understanding of child development, differentiated instruction strategies, and a passion for student growth.

As we launch Journey Christian Academy, we want to personalize discussions about tuition and financial aid. Our admissions team is committed to working closely with each family to understand your financial needs and explore options that make a JCA education possible for your child.

Journey Christian Academy recognizes that students learn and thrive in different ways. We are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment that caters to a variety of learning needs and styles.

To determine academic serviceability and explore potential accommodations, we encourage families to submit a copy of their child’s current IEP or 504 Plan along with the application materials. Our admissions team will work collaboratively with families to ensure we can provide the necessary support for a successful learning experience.

Journey Christian Academy recognizes the value of technology as a powerful tool to enhance learning and prepare students for the future. We thoughtfully integrate technology into our classrooms in ways that support our educational philosophy:

  • Smart Board Technology: Our classrooms are equipped with interactive smart boards, which allow teachers to present dynamic lessons, engage students through multimedia, and foster collaborative learning.
  • Computer Skills & Research: Students develop essential computer skills, including word processing, research techniques, and digital presentation creation.
  • Subject-Specific Tools: Teachers may utilize subject-specific software and online resources to supplement instruction in areas like math, science, and language arts.
  • Responsible Digital Citizenship: We emphasize responsible and ethical technology use, teaching students about online safety, critical evaluation of information, and positive online interactions that reflect Christian values.

Important Note: We believe technology should serve as a tool, not replace traditional teaching methods or personal interaction. Our focus remains on providing a Christ-centered education that develops the whole student.
